Describe what you do in your job. What is a typical day like?

I deal with health and safety enquiries from different departments, create and distribute H&S alerts in line with current trends and issues (for example, extreme weather), accident/incident investigations, reviewing risk assessments, plus undertaking and assisting in health and safety inspections. My role involves both office and field work, and I really enjoy the variety?

What other jobs or work experience have you had?

I have previous experience in construction as a admin assistant and project coordinator.

What process did you have to follow to get your job?

Application and interview.

What is great about your job? What part of your job do you enjoy the most?

My job is great because I like to see that we are making a difference and helping people. I enjoy attending site, meeting the new people and having a look at the different projects. Construction sites are my favourites to visit; I like how you can go to a site one day and it be nothing but mud, and then a few months later there is a building that J Tomlinson has managed the construction of – it’s nice to see the work in progress.

What training do you do at work to help you do your job role?

I undertake a development plan every month with my manager and I have currently completed Scaffold Inspection training, Temporary Works training and I am booked on to complete my Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) . In the future I will undertake an NVQ in health and safety, as that is my preferred option.

What role-specific qualifications do you think are needed to do your job?

Health and safety qualifications – there are a variety but any that will allow me to be a graduate in IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health).

Name the top three skills needed for your job.

Consistency, approachable and attention to detail

What was the highest level of qualification you needed from school, college or university to do your role?

I currently have a qualification that is equivalent to an A-level.

Briefly describe your personality and how it compliments your role

I am a confident, bubbly, friendly person. This helps in my role as I work with people face-to-face, virtually, and over the phone, and deal with difficult situations sometimes.

Do you have any interests that complement your job role?

Construction and Health and Safety

How many years of experience do you need to do your job?

A few years in construction, but I am a trainee so this could be open to anyone if they are willing to train and they have transferable skills.
