Skanska was selected as the PFI Contracting Partner for the redevelopment of the Hospital including Tower 3 and the Women’s and Children’s Services.
An important innovation at the site was the geothermal heating and cooling system. The system is the largest geothermal lake loop in Europe and will meet all of the hospital’s needs for cooling, and support the gas heating system saving in excess of £1m per annum,. The project therefore required highly complex, energy efficient Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) Services.
J Tomlinson was engaged by Skanska to undertake the full M&E Services for the 7-storey Tower 3 and 2-storey Women’s and Children’s Services. We assisted our client at all stages through to project completion, including the design co-ordination, integration and commissioning of all the services necessary to provide the end user with sustainable and efficient building.
A significant part of the project was the integration of all of the site wide services, which combined together made the ceiling and service voids extremely complex. To overcome this we carried out detailed 3D modelling to ensure the services were both easy to install and accessible for maintenance.
Our Mechanical Services included the installation of heavy plant such as buffer vessels and air handling units to serve the heating and domestic hot water demand of the tower. The ventilation included fire rated ductwork and passive pressure relief control for critical areas such as major Operating Theatres.
The electrical installation incorporated modular wiring throughout using a fully metallic wiring system for the floor plates with a busbar distribution system between the floors. The supply and integration of Isolated Power Systems (IPS’s), UPS’s and MEIGaN earthing arrangements for the Theatres including surgeons control panels, all combined to provide a fully HTM (Health Technical Memoranda) compliant installation.
Accident free – The project successfully reached a milestone of 1,000,000 hours worked without a reportable incident.
High quality work, on time & on budget - J Tomlinson supplied high quality, complex systems, within the required timescales and on budget.
Collaborative and coordinated approach - this building’s complex delivery required high levels of coordination and a collaborative approach between all parties in its timely completion.
Contractor of the Month Awards – The J Tomlinson project team were successful in winning the Skanska Contractor of the month award 4 times over 12 months out of 60 sub-contractors working on the site.
