Project Background

Radford Health Centre delivers podiatry, GP practice, Dental and other primary care services to a diverse local community. The centre is based in a three-storey building, and occupied by a range of medical practices including St Luke’s Medical Practice and Radford Health Centre, along with office support spaces for district nursing and administrative support.

J Tomlinson was appointed by NHS Property Services to manage a major refurbishment project across Radford Health Centre. The project, which spanned all three floors of the building including waiting rooms and communal areas, comprised ceiling, kitchen and toilet replacements, mechanical and electrical upgrades, installation of a new passenger lift, plus painting and decorating works.

The centre would remain open to patients throughout the six-month project, which was partially delivered during a national lockdown period enforced by the government in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The scheme commenced at a highly busy time for the NHS, just as the COVID-19 vaccination roll-out was gaining momentum.

J Tomlinson Solution

Live Medical Centre Environment

Working within a live medical centre in the midst of a global pandemic, J Tomlinson’s approach was centred around protecting patients, staff and the wider community whilst minimising the impact of our combined operations. This was managed via clear segregation of working areas, implementation of noise and dust-minimisation techniques, alongside close liaison with the client and building staff to ensure all parties were kept abreast of all upcoming works and any changes to the project programme.

Disruptive works, including replacement of the building’s passenger lift, electrical upgrades, and alterations to waiting and corridor areas were undertaken out of surgery hours.

At the end of each working day/night, all working areas within the building were deep cleaned to ensure the centre was fully prepared and fit for opening each day.

Ensuring Compliance With Specialist Healthcare Standards

Working closely with clinical specialists and in strict accordance with HTM guidance, J Tomlinson ensured that all materials and finishes were fully compliant in the areas of infection control and disability access. In addition, we ensured excellent acoustic performance of all new walls and doors to help the medical centre continue to preserve critical patient and staff confidentiality during appointments.

On-Time Delivery

The project was completed to a high-quality finish and in line with the agreed programme, with staff and patients working at Radford Medical Centre and St Luke’s Medical Practice now benefitting from upgraded, aesthetically-enhanced facilities that are fit for the future.
