J Tomlinson delivering £1.8m Water Source Heat Pump scheme in partnership with Norwich City

May 20, 2022

J Tomlinson are excited to be well underway with the design and installation of a water source heat pump (WSHP) system at a housing scheme on behalf of Norwich City Council. On site installation commenced in September 2021.

The system will abstract water from the river Wensum in the heart of Norwich to provide the heat energy to the Heat pumps, this will then be distributed via a communal distribution to all properties within the Barnards Yard scheme, near Duke Street.

The WSHP system will replace the existing gas fired plant room, which emits carbon and is expected to save 270 tonnes of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere a year, the same as absorbed by 12,854 fully grown trees.

J Tomlinson has supported the client in obtaining Environment Agency (EA) pre-approval and Non-Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (NDRHI) via TG:3 guarantee which will provide them with long term ROI for 20 years. As part of the project, a billing, metering, and monitoring system will be installed to enable tenants to only pay for what they use and ensuring regulations are met.

The scheme is situated within a conservation area in the centre of Norwich and, with no room for geo-thermal drilling, efficient renewable heating options were limited, with a water source being the preferred and greenest option.

J Tomlinson Chief Executive, Mark Davis, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Norwich City Council, in what is the first water source project the Council has undertaken. This is a critical scheme for all parties involved as it is the most carbon friendly solution in providing heat to multi-occupancy domestic property networks.

This type of solution will work in and around all forms of water including lakes and canal networks. From the consumer’s perspective, it is anticipated that the running costs of the systems will be significantly lower, which has never been so important in this challenging energy climate we are living in today”.
