J Tomlinson to create new office space in Birmingham city centre

September 28, 2021

J Tomlinson is making positive progress on the fit-out and refurbishment of an entire floor of the Grade II listed Baskerville House in Birmingham city centre.

The refurbishment, maintenance and construction specialist was awarded the £3 million contract after being appointed to the Crown Commercial Service Construction Work and Associated Services framework in 2019, which was developed to facilitate construction works and associated services for Central Government Departments and all other UK Public Sector bodies. This project will add to J Tomlinson’s wealth of experience in delivering office upgrades and adaptations across the Midlands.

Originally the site of John Baskerville’s home, an English businessman and renowned printer and typographer, the 1930s-built Baskerville House is located at the heart of Birmingham city centre. After sitting abandoned for several years, it was restored into an office block in 2003 which remains in use today.

Scope of works

The project, which is due to complete during winter, sees J Tomlinson continuing its successful relationship with principal consultant, Gleeds, and managing a comprehensive fit-out and refurbishment of the 6th floor of Baskerville House to create a high-specification, energy-efficient office space. Works include construction of new partition walls, glazed screens and door sets, replacement of carpet tiles and decorations, together with extensive alterations to the existing mechanical and electrical installations including reserve battery and generator backup provisions.

As part of the project, J Tomlinson’s specialist in-house M&E team is also managing the installation of dedicated tenant M&E supplies, including fitting an Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS) system, as well as provision of furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E).

City centre and office refurbishment expertise

J Tomlinson has ample knowledge and experience of refurbishing high-spec office spaces, including the highly successful redevelopment of Toll Bar House in Derbyshire, which has undergone a comprehensive refurbishment scheme to form 27 energy-efficient offices, kitchen and bathroom facilities.

Working in a busy city centre, J Tomlinson will use its expertise to ensure the public, and current building occupants are protected and disruption kept to a minimum. The company has successfully delivered a range of city centre-based building projects, including the recently completed refurbishment of Grade II* listed Adams Building in Nottingham and the redevelopment of the Haymarket Health clinic in Leicester.

Quote from Iain Davies:

Iain Davies, managing director of J Tomlinson’s refurbishment and engineering division, commented: “It is a privilege to be able to work on the creation of this new high-specification office in such a landmark building in the epicentre of Birmingham’s business community. We are working closely with Gleeds and the wider project team to deliver a modern and engaging workspace.”
