J Tomlinson re‐secures FM contract with long term client West Midlands Ambulance Service
May 11, 2021
J Tomlinson is pleased to continue its partnership with long‐term client West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust (WMAS) after re‐securing a planned and reactive maintenance contract with the emergency service specialist.
Worth approximately £1m per annum and having commenced last month, the contract will see J Tomlinson delivering planned and relative maintenance, renewable and low carbon energy solutions, as well as spin‐off building projects across WMAS’s property portfolio, which comprises community ambulance stations, 999 and 111 operating centres, fleet preparation hubs and a training academy covering a 5,000s square mile radius.
Working across Shropshire, Staffordshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Coventry, Warwickshire, Birmingham and the Black Country, J Tomlinson will work closely with WMAS to ensure the Trust’s premises and equipment comply to all statutory legislation, are legally safe, and run to optimum efficiency, helping to support delivery of the Trust’s 24/7 “mission‐critical” operations.
Planned works will include servicing and maintenance of internal and external systems across Trust premises, grounds and gardens, including heating, cooling and ventilation, water, fire‐fighting equipment, pest control and landscaping.
A joint approach to decarbonising the Trust’s fleet and assets
As part of the contract, J Tomlinson will work with WMAS to help the Trust decarbonise its fleet and its assets, with J Tomlinson using its low carbon and renewables expertise to facilitate the roll‐out of EV charging infrastructure across multiple WMAS sites. These include the installation of two 120kW rapid chargers at Erdington and Hollymoor‐based hubs which will ensure minimal downtime for the Trust’s EV fleet.
In late 2020, WMAS took major strides in reducing its impact on the environment by introducing the first all‐electric ambulance to “blue light duties”, and the planned installations will ensure that WMAS’s fleet will always be fully charged and ready to deliver emergency response to the West Midlands, whilst contributing to the NHS 2050 net zero target.
Continuation of long-term partnership
WMAS, which services a population of approximately 5.6 million people covering more than 5,000 square miles, has worked with J Tomlinson for over five years after appointing the Midlands‐based building and maintenance services partner on a 5‐year facilities management contract in 2015.
The contract was resecured in late 2020 following a comprehensive tender process in which J Tomlinson demonstrated the best value offering as well as its position as a specialist provider of building and maintenance services to blue light organisations.
J Tomlinson will be supporting delivery of the contract from its in‐house maintenance service centre, providing 24‐hour‐a‐day, all‐year‐round support, including emergency response.
IT integration – supporting excellent data management
During the length of the agreement, which runs for three years with the possibility of two one‐year extensions, J Tomlinson’s approach will harness the use of digital technology to help ensure that WMAS buildings remain safe, secure, complaint 24/7.
The new contract will be run on J Tomlinson’s pioneering IFS Computer Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) System. Designed by J Tomlinson’s in‐house software development specialists, this system has been tailored to the Trust’s exact reporting requirements, aligned to contract‐specific KPIs and providing a highly secure platform for the transparent management of data.
Quote from Steve Kirkland, managing director (Maintenance) at J Tomlinson
Steve Kirkland, managing director of J Tomlinson’s Maintenance department, commented: “We’re delighted to have resecured our long‐term partnership with West Midlands Ambulance Service, helping the Trust continue to provide critical and highly efficient emergency services to the West Midlands region – something that is even more critical in light of the global Covid‐19 pandemic.
“In addition to providing planned and reactive maintenance, we are excited to working in partnership with WMAS to create the infrastructure and back office management system to support the electrification of its ambulance fleet. There are currently 20 sites across the WMAS operations that have been assessed and scheduled for installation of EV Chargers, with more to come as the contract progresses.
“Both J Tomlinson and WMAS are aligned in their commitment to creating a low carbon future, and we are excited to help our client contribute to meeting their air quality targets as Birmingham introduces its Clean Air Zone in June 2021.
“We are very much looking forward to continuing this long‐term partnership over the next few years.”
Quote from Tony Page, general manager (fleet and FM) at WMAS
Tony Page, general manager for fleet and facilities management at West Midlands Ambulance Service, added: ‘’We are pleased to continue our working relationship with J Tomlinson; they secured the business following a competitive tendering process during which they clearly demonstrated their commitment and vision for improvement is aligned with ours. We have commenced the new contract with an improved digital platform and joint desire to further enhance the work already delivered around the sustainability of our estates portfolio.”
